Orthodontic Extractions

Orthodontic extractions represent a common procedure in orthodontic treatment plans. They typically involve removing one or more teeth to create space in the dental arch. Orthodontic extractions may be recommended when other orthodontic methods cannot correct significant crowding or misaligned teeth. In developing a treatment plan that includes orthodontic extractions, all factors, including facial aesthetics, smile alignment, bite function, and long-term dental health, are considered.

Often, one, two, or up to four premolars are the teeth designated for orthodontic extractions. Since the premolars are located in the middle of the dental arch, their removal helps create substantial space for realigning the front and back teeth. Of course, depending on the unique requirements of each case, a different tooth or teeth may be recommended for extraction. Following the extractions and healing, orthodontic appliances such as braces, or clear aligners can be placed to move the remaining teeth into their ideal positions gradually. Orthodontic treatment can take anywhere from several months to a few years to align the teeth and bite. It all depends on the complexity of the case and individual response to treatment.

Performing orthodontic extractions

Many orthodontic extractions can be performed as simple extractions in our office under local anesthesia. Our experienced dental team, proficient in these procedures, will ensure your comfort and relaxation throughout every step of care. We will discuss additional options in dental sedation and care for patients anxious about the procedure or requiring more complex surgical extractions.
